February half term was a busy one for Junior Clarets. As well as the week long holiday courses, we organised a bowling event featuring Kevin McDonald and invited everyone down to sing the backing vocals on our new club anthem too. But it all kicked off with a trip to the ice hockey.
We gave two adult and two child tickets to every Junior Claret who registered to see Manchester Phoenix face Basingstoke Bison in the Challenge Cup semi-final. It was the first time in 10 years that an ice hockey team from Manchester has got so far in the competition. And Manchester won by a whopping six goals to one!
Founded in 2003, the Manchester Phoenix are the North West's only full-time ice hockey club. They have teams from under 10 level right up to the fully professional BMI Elite Ice Hockey League squad, and they all play at the 2,200 seater Altrincham Ice Dome.
The professional team will play over 30 home games in 2008-09 and compete on all fronts for silverware against clubs from Basingstoke, Belfast, Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, Hull, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.
Watching the Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey Club is a true family orientated experience.
Elite League home games are predominantly on Sunday evening, commencing at 5.30pm and finishing by 8.00pm. A night at the Ice Hockey is an entertainment-packed affair with lots of interactive off-ice fun for all the family. And in addition to the speed, skills, thrills and spills of the fastest team sport in the world, is an atmosphere that’s second to none.
